Long-tailed Duck- the latest addition to the Thai avifauna

On 4 January, Boonphob Kansiwiang, a Non-Hunting Area official, and Sopitcha Tantitadpitak found Thailand’s first Long-tailed Duck (Clangula hyemalis) at Nong Bong Khai Non-Hunting Area (Chiang Saen Lake), Chiang Rai Province. The bird was found independently by local watchers, Dowroong and Mick Davies, and visiting birder,. Dave Sargeant, two days later. It has since proved slightly elusive, but was showing well on 9 January, when the attached photo was obtained. .
The occurrence of this Holarctic breeder (and mainly north-temperate winterer, along seacoasts) in Thailand is remarkable, and is the first SE Asian record. There seem not to be any records even in well-watched Hong Kong.
If all goes well it could stay at Nong Bong Khai for a long period as it was feeding well and appeared well settled.
